🛤️ Structural Health Monitoring System
Real-time analytics & insights for Bridge No. 104 — Ensuring safety, reliability, and performance.
Project Overview
Integrated Structural Health Monitoring System for Railway Bridge No. 104, installed by Medulla Soft Technologies SHM Pvt Ltd for IRCON International Limited.
Monitoring deflection, stress, and vibration characteristics to ensure structural integrity.
Train Monitoring
Tracking 5 train types: Goods Train, Howrah-Gaya Express, Kiul-Gaya MEMU Special, Rampur-Hatt-Gaya Passenger Special, and Vande Bharat Express.
Recording deflection, stress, and acceleration data for each passage.
Sensor Network
9 sensors deployed: 3 triaxial accelerometers, 2 joint/deflection meters, and 4 fiber optic strain/stress sensors.
Monitoring critical points at first quarter, mid, and third quarter of the girder.
Deflection by Train Type
Maximum deflection observed for different train types crossing Bridge 104
| Train Type | Left Girder (mm) | Right Girder (mm) | Permissible |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goods Train | 4.51 | 4.86 | 9.50 |
| Howrah-Gaya Express | 2.20 | 2.70 | 9.50 |
| Kiul-Gaya MEMU | 0.92 | 1.82 | 9.50 |
| Rampur Hatt-Gaya Passenger | 2.40 | 2.60 | 9.50 |
| Vande Bharat Express | 0.59 | 0.96 | 9.50 |
Critical Observations
- Goods Train shows highest deflections (4.86mm) and stresses (35.02 MPa)
- Mid of Girder shows higher stresses compared to quarter points
- Peak accelerations (0.68g's) exceed Eurocode limits (not basis of design)
- Speed restriction up to 70 Kmph recommended for Goods trains
- Bridge meets IRS standards for all train types except Goods
Stress Analysis by Position
Stress observed at different positions on the girder (Goods Train)
| Position | Max Stress (MPa) | Min Stress (MPa) |
|---|---|---|
| First Quarter | 19.80 | -0.98 |
| Mid (Bottom Flange) | 35.02 | -0.42 |
| Mid (Top Flange) | -11.07 | 0.21 |
| Third Quarter | 17.51 | 0.08 |
Sensor Network
Triaxial accelerometers and strain sensors on the girder
| Sensor ID | Type | Location |
|---|---|---|
| R1-R3 | Triaxial Accelerometer | Right Girder (5m, 10m, 15m) |
| JM1-JM2 | Deflection Meter | Center (Left & Right Girder) |
| L1-L3 | Fiber Optic Strain | Left Girder (5m, 10m, 15m) |
| L2-T, L2-B | Top/Bottom Flange | Mid of Left Girder |
